The Players Championship
Widely considered the most important PGA Tour event outside of the four majors and the Ryder Cup, played each year at TPC Sawgrass.
The Players Championship is widely considered the most important PGA Tour event outside of the four majors and the Ryder Cup. The tournament is played each year at TPC Sawgrass in Florida shortly before the Masters, with the strong field and tour-administered structure producing tournament drama matching the actual majors. The Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass features the iconic island-green 17th hole, which has decided countless Players Championships through the years. The tournament purse is among the largest of any PGA Tour event, and field-strength rankings consistently place the Players among the very top tournaments worldwide. The unofficial nickname Fifth Major (covered separately) acknowledges the tournament's significance despite the technical designation as a regular tour event rather than a major championship.
How Golfers Say It
"Players Championship at Sawgrass."
"Fifth Major in March."
"Island-green 17th."
Origin
The Players Championship was first played in 1974 with the inaugural event at Atlanta Country Club. The tournament moved to TPC Sawgrass in 1982, where it has been held continuously since. The PGA Tour owns and operates the Stadium Course, designed specifically as a tournament venue by Pete Dye.
Rules & Context
The Players Championship is administered by the PGA Tour and follows the Rules of Golf with tournament-specific local rules. The tournament uses standard four-round stroke play with a 36-hole cut. Standard tour-event rules apply including playoff format.
"Best tournament outside the majors. Field strength, venue quality, and tournament traditions all rank among golf's elite. Worth watching every March; the 17th island green produces drama unlike any other par-3 in professional golf."
Frequently Asked Questions
Why isn't Players Championship a major?
Administrative classification. Majors are administered by R&A, USGA, Augusta National, and PGA of America. Players Championship is run by the PGA Tour. Major status reflects administering organization rather than tournament prestige alone. Some argue Players deserves major status despite the technical classification.
What's the iconic 17th hole?
An island green par-3 (approximately 137 yards) surrounded entirely by water. The small green has no safe miss; any imprecise shot finds the water. The hole has decided countless Players Championships, with both heroic shots and disasters defining tournament outcomes. One of golf's most photographed holes.
When is The Players Championship?
March annually (since 2007 with various year ranges). The tournament moved from its original May slot to March, then back to May for several years, then returned to March in 2019. The current March position is among the early-season showcase events.
